Feminine Touch

Now, another quick introduction… Patti is a gal pal that I met nearly 20 (gulp!) years ago. We spent a good part of the 90’s watching enough Hercules and Xena to choke a Trojan Horse. That is, when we were not going to conventions, or acting out role-playing games (with our other friends).

I recently called her up after several months (I’m ashamed to say its been that long), and asked if she would like to contribute her thoughts here. She foolishly said, “yes”. So, expect to see her weigh in on the occasional topic.

Shout Out To Gary!

I met Gary at Comic Masters, ten (or so) years ago. There is NO doubt, that if he were still living in the area, that he would be part of our Saturday gang. Gary is a real good guy, and has spent a great deal of the last few years taking care of some of his family in New Jersey. He is missed around the store, but he and I still talk every couple of weeks.

He has his own blog:http://garhoch-randomthoughts.blogspot.com It should be checked out (I really liked his rundown of the Christopher Priest Black Panther), and it even has pictures. Plus, if you like toys, he has a lot of video toy reviews on Youtube (plug in garhoch).

Anyway, I'll be asking him to contribute to our lists whenever he can, and hope to see him in person again (one day).

Who Needs The Oscars and Emmys?

Back again. This time we’ll put the funny books aside. The guys (Dom , John, Ken, and Robert) also love talking about TV and movies. We’ve either all gone to the theatre together, or indulged in Dom’s hospitality (and watched the tube over his place). We have riffed at the set (MST3K style) after a clunker on video, or stood outside the cinema for a couple hours after witnessing a train wreck (G.I. Joe anyone?). But, we also like a lot of things we see as well. So, now we’re here to provide our views on the best things to hit the screen (be it cable or IMAX).

Going Negative

Back already with another Comic Master clique list. This time the boys threw a little venom at the books that did us wrong.

John’s Top Ten Worst Comics of the Decade (2000-2009)

1) Brian Bendis’Avengers (the Earth’s Mightiest Coach Potatoes take on a stray Skrull or two- when they’re not watching the tube)

2) JMS’ Amazing-Spider-Man (Peter’s a totem, Gwen's a tramp, and Doom sheds tears)

5) All Star Batman and Robin, The Boy Wonder (the only late book you pray will never ship)

6) Dark Knight Strikes Again (Frank Miller goes bat-crap crazy)

9) The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive (Bart Allen grows up, and gets a swift death)

10) The Truth: Red, White, and Black (a cynical slap in the face to Simon & Kirby. Just because they were Jewish, fought in World War Two, and created Captain America- doesn’t mean they knew THE TRUTH behind his origin)

Top Ten: Comic Masters Style

In my first post I introduced you to the gang. That gang, being a quartet of comic fanboys that gather nearly every Saturday at Comic Masters in Whitehall, PA. The roll call includes: Dom, Ken, Robert, and John (hey, that’s me). Now, like any good team, we have a guest star or two (Marty, I’m talking about you). However, this is the core group (meaning the guys that have so little to do on a beautiful morning that they burn away their time talking all things pop culture).

In looking for content for my fledging blog, I asked them to try and distill some of our marathon conversations (this writer is awesome, that guy sucks, Blackest Night rules, what the hell is Morrison smoking, etc.) into simple entries I could use. Leaving creativity for actual comic writers, I came up with the idea of Top Ten (sometimes longer) lists. Yeah, real original. But, the other guys took to it, and we’ve been going non-stop for weeks.

To kick it off (with the last decade just ended) we talked about our Ten Best Comics of the last Ten Years. I will be posting these, along with our other lists, for a few reasons. One, I have time on my hands. Two, the guys were kind enough to humor me. Three, I think it might be interesting for other Comic Masters shoppers to see what some of your fellow customers are digging (or not). So, tell others about the blog.

John’s Top Ten Comics of the Decade (2000-2009)

1) Green Lantern (everything Geoff Johns has written- Rebirth, Ongoing, Sinestro Corps, Blackest Night)

2) DC: The New Frontier (every page is bursting with the heroic ideal)

3) JLA/Avengers (the greatest company crossover EVER)

4) The Work of Brian K Vaughn (I couldn’t decide between Y, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways, Mystique, The Escapists, etc. Plus, he wrote for Lost)

5) Ed Brubaker’s Captain America (in a word- BUCKY)

6) JSA/Justice Society of America (Geoff Johns made this the finest team book for years)

7) Geoff Johns’ The Flash (all of it: his long run on Wally’s title, Rogues’ Revenge, Rebirth, Blackest Night: Flash, Iron Heights)

8) Gotham Central (the greatest TV cop show ever put to paper)

9) Mark Waid’s Fantastic Four (after Lee & Kirby and Byrne, this is the best of the FF)

10) Marvel Cosmic (not a single title, but a singular experience- huge intergalactic wars spread over multiple ongoings and minis. DnA are killing it, and Nova has never been better)

Ken’s Top Ten Comics of the Decade (2000-2009)

1) Green Lantern (Like your humble host he includes it all, plus the ongoing Green Lantern Corps title)

2) Geoff John’s The Flash

3) JLA/Avengers

4) JSA/Justice Society of America (Geoff Johns style)

5) Ed Brubaker’s Captain America

6) Star Wars: Legacy (a title that would be eleventh on my list)

7) Nova

8) Invincible

9) Justice (the Alex Ross mini)

10) Powers

Robert’s Top Ten Comics of the Decade (2000-2009)

1) Secret Six

2) Green Lantern (Geoff Johns)

3) Birds of Prey (Gail Simone flavored only please)

4) Green Lantern Corps

5) JSA/Justice Society of America (Geoff Johns)

6) Irredeemable

7) Paul Dini’s Detective Comics

8) JLA/Avengers

9) IDW’s G.I. Joe Titles

10) Ed Brubaker’s Captain America

Dom’s Top Ten Comics of the Decade (2000-2009)

1) JSA/Justice Society of America (Geoff Johns)

2) JLA/Avengers

3) Green Lantern: Rebirth

4) Green Lantern (ongoing)

5) Starman (the tail end of the James Robinson era)

6) Nightwing (by the short lived combo of Marv Wolfman & Jamal Igle)

7) The Flash (Geoff Johns)

8) Superman Books (Post One Year Later)

9) Project: Super Powers

10) Daredevil (Ed Brubaker & Michael Lark)

As you can see, we have quite a few titles in common (a trend that extends to our other lists). If I cross-reference our choices, our joint top five would be:

1) Green Lantern (Johns)

2) JLA/Avengers

3) JSA/Justice Society of America (Johns)

4) The Flash (Johns)

5) Captain America (Brubaker)

I feel that’s a pretty fair assessment of mainstream taste. That is to say- Geoff Johns is THE MAN!

Who's For Seconds? (Or, I Have Bats I My Belfry)

Well my friends, I have decided to make my second entry a rather strange one. You see I am a bit frustrated. Like a lot of comic fans, I have wanted to write for one of the Big Two companies (DC/Marvel). To that end, I have created several pitches. I'll be posting these in the future, since they have been rejected. Now, I have no illusions. Hundreds of fans create their own stories, and have to accept that they are not ready for prime time. The only thing that sticks in my craw, is that several (make that nearly all)of the elements I created for a Shazam pitch have appeared throughout a string of titles over the last few years. I'm not bitter, and am well aware that writers tap into a shared "idea space". And, there will be plenty of time to examine what occurred.

Because of this I went back and looked at some fanfic I was writing. This was not a pitch, and no one at DC has ever seen it. It was just a fun way for me to spend an evening. The All Star Batman and Robin book began in 2005. From the start it suffered delays, and a huge critical backlash. So, in January 2007, I speculated on what I would do if given an All Star Batman title. Now, three years later, I see a bunch of stuff in here that has sorta made its way into the actual books. Make no mistake, this is all just kind of a funny convergence, and proves just how powerful the concept of "idea space" really is. For instance, the title of the book All Star Batman Reborn, was before the Batman Reborn name was used for Morrison's first Batman and Robin arc (although that's not exactly original to begin with); the first arc of my fanfic book is VS. Robin (the same name as Morrison's current arc); the use of Enigma as something more that just the Riddler's real name (In Trinity as an alternate alias, here as the title of a spy agency); the use of Bat-Mite as a psychological menace (shown in Morrison's R.I.P., here as a nano-tech infection); the inclusion of time travel and other pieces of Batman's Golden/Silver Age past. Plus, much more.

In addition to character profiles, and a series Bible, I came up with a wild outline of years worth of stories in about an hour. This outline took the form of fifty (kind of silly) fake Previews solicitations. I thought it would be fun to run these. One day I'll post more about the actual background and content to this zany little "project". But, for now just imagine opening up the next issue (or fifty) of Previews, and seeing these solicits:

All Star Batman Reborn #16- “A Life In Crime Alley” Part Four (of Five). Is it love, or a chill in the air? Batman continues to grow closer to Julie, while battling the slick Mr. Freeze. All Star Batman Reborn #17- “A Life In Crime Alley” Part Five (of Five). Batman and Robin meet again! This time though, they fight as one. That should spell trouble for Mr. Freeze and the Clue Master, but will Bruce Wayne’s trip down memory lane lead to a dead end?

First Things First

Hi,

John Conlon here! What? Who is John Conlon? Well, I'm a father, husband, writer, and Boston Market fanatic. But, most of all I read comics. Ah, comics. For the last decade, or so, I have been proudly buying my books at Comic Masters in Whitehall, PA. The owner, Harry, is a master of making his customers feel like part of the family. He has been in business for many years, and continues to reward his clients with annual parties (he rents out a local theatre in conjunction with new comic based films), and just about the warmest service you could ask for. Thanks Harry!

That said, the real fun starts on Saturday morning. Saturday morning? Yep, that's right. While everyone else is looking forward to partying that night, my weekly ritual includes meeting up with the gang bright and early in the morning. The gang includes Dom (Harry's right hand man, who balances showing us Youtube videos, Venture Brothers episodes, comics talk, and the uncanny ability to also bag and board), Ken (huge Dr. Who fan, who is always eager to find out about the latest in comics, movies, and TV), Robert (who seeks out original art, stalks Amanda Conner, and prays that Zatanna could magically come to life), and myself (who can babble about Legion of Super-Heroes history till their ears bleed).

This blog is dedicated to our mutual love of comics. To that end I have enlisted them in coming up with various lists regarding every aspect of comics fandom. I'll be putting up the first batch of these soon. This will also be a place to review the comics I have read, and a way for me to post various content I have developed for comics publication (that have sadly never seen print). These include a bunch of pitches and articles.

I invite everyone who loves comics to follow along, and if you are in the Lehigh Valley one Saturday to stop in to Comic Masters. Join in the conversation, it is always spirited...just make sure to buy a little something.
